The Origin Of the Gods?
Did the gods originate as dreams?
Consider that many people have dreams of supernatural beings. Is it plausible that in the past some people who had such dreams came to worship the gods they dreamt of?

Perhaps, but I'm also willing to bet they came about as a conscious construction of the universe - an attempt to order the chaos, if you will.
Older gods are usually nature based, reflecting cultures concerned with survival, while newer gods tend to represent ideas (i.e. creation, destruction) as they became more philosophically inclined.
