MrsDoF says HP is a school story like any other. You gots yer bullies friends, teachers, and a whole class of grown-ups who just don't understand. That it is in the context of a magical world makes it less obvious. What's not to identify with?
It's the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew with wands.
