Why Is Harry Potter So Popular?

What is it about the Harry Potter series that makes it so popular world wide?

The themes of good and evil, us and them, being different, are perennial and can be understood and appreciated by many different cultures.

I find Harry Potter to be fun and engaging. Its social metaphors makes me think. Rowling is a great writer.

MrsDoF says HP is a school story like any other. You gots yer bullies friends, teachers, and a whole class of grown-ups who just don't understand. That it is in the context of a magical world makes it less obvious. What's not to identify with?
